Getting to Know Christopher Donovan, Stand-Up Comedian
Stand-up comedian Christopher Donovan supports Alasdair Beckett-King in the first of the renewed comedy series by resident comic Howard Walker.
Donovan's journey to becoming a stand-up comedian has been one he never expected to make. As a comedy writer, he envisioned more of a career off-stage.
"My time in stand-up is one big happy accident. I went to watch a friend perform and decided to try my hand at a few gigs. On one of my first gigs, an organiser took me aside and told me they really enjoyed my awkward virgin persona. I didn’t realise I had a persona."
His "awkward virgin persona" has only benefited him, as he performs at comedy festivals and tops competitions.
"Some friends pushed me to enter a contest called So You Think You’re Funny? and I ended up getting to the final. Everyone involved in the contest, from other comedians to the senior organisers, was so encouraging and it made me feel like I wasn’t totally delusional and that I should keep going. In 2024 I did a split bill at the Edinburgh Fringe and got to feel like a proper comedian. In 2025 I went back and did another split bill. Edinburgh during the Fringe is a beautiful, exhausting and amazing experience, and I learned so much."
Now, Christopher Donovan brings his Fringe-famous award-winning comedy to Silsden for the first time, as part of the Town Hall's efforts to give more opportunities to grassroots performers.
"Earlier this year I gigged in Bath and ended up winning the local competition. I love seeing the humour and preferences of different regions, and stand-up has given me the opportunity to travel all over the UK gigging. This is why I’m so grateful to be gigging at Silsden Town Hall. A venue that places emphasis on grassroots performers and gives them a chance to show what they can do. I haven’t been to the area before, and I’m excited to look around."

"If you enjoy material about physical weakness, card factory, working in retail, films, and Batman (you know, all the heavy topics), then we’re going to have a great night together. See you there!"
Christopher Donovan appears alongside Alasdair Beckett-King and Howard Walker this January at Silsden Town Hall.
